Notebook 5. Northern England and Scotland

The BSR has initiated this Digital Humanities Research Project in collaboration with Prof. Rosemary Sweet and Dr. Richard Ansell, both from the University of Leicester, selecting William Gell’s sketchbook of landscapes and monuments in northern England and Scotland as a pilot project.

The drawings have been individually catalogued and a digital version of the sketchbook can be browsed.

A link has been created where relevant, thanks to the research by Alexander Deans, University of Glasgow, to Canmore, National Record of the Historic Environment, for archaeological sites, buildings and monuments across Scotland.

The sketchbook has been restored, digitized and researched thanks to the generosity of John Osborn, John Beale and The John R. Murray Charitable Trust. The inclusion of the research project on this website was generously funded by Dan O’Connor
